Wimbledon becomes a fashion show

Since 1877, the Wimbledon Championships have been one of the most iconic events of the summer in England, especially for tennis lovers. But those of us who are fans of fashion also enjoy it quite a bit, because with its dress code, every year we see a catwalk of celebrities making a name for themselves with their outfits.

But 2023 is a different year for Wimbledon as, for the first time in its history, it has changed the dress code for women to allow them to wear dark-coloured underwear. The aim of allowing this rule change is simple: to ease the concerns of players who might be on their period.

Sally Bolton is the chief executive of the All England Club, the club that has hosted Wimbledon since its inception, and in a statement she said she hopes the new rule will help competitors focus solely on their performance and alleviate what could be a source of anxiety.

According to Robert Lake for BBC Culture, the all-white dress code has always been this way as it is a colour that hides sweat well, looks clean and tidy, and also represents kindness but above all the leisure of the upper middle class.

And although the code has been given and changed according to the times, in general rules it remains as straight as when it was created. For example, the color white must be completely white; bone and cream are not allowed in the players' clothing. Color has been added by being allowed in trim or accessories but this must not be more than one centimeter wide, and variations in material or pattern are not accepted.

Although the rule change regarding players' underwear is minimal, it has been welcomed by the players. US competitor Coco Gauff told Sky News the change will alleviate a lot of stress for her and her teammates in the locker room.
